A VIOLA DE ARAME: ORIGEM E INTRODUÇÃO NO BRASIL

The viola or viola de arame (wire viola), an instrument introduced in Brasil in the 16th century by the Portuguese, took on comprehensive historical and social roles. Through it, the musical culture of the dominant classes reached the peasant and the bourgeois production absorbed elements of that culture, which were indispensable to its national language. By the mid nineteenth-century, it was replaced, mainly in urban areas, by the guitar, period that symbolically mark the establishment of new forms of social interaction between the popular layers. Among these, stand out the chorões, ensembles of musicians whose activities have been of paramount importance to the so-called "nationalization of European dances" and the establishment of disk recording from 1902 onwards.A viola de arame, instrumento introduzido no Brasil no século XVI pelos portugueses, assumiu abrangente papel histórico e social. Por meio dela a cultura musical das classes dominantes chegou ao alcance da cultura rústica, assim como a produção burguesa absorveu, posteriormente, os elementos daquela cultura rústica indispensáveis à sua linguagem nacional. Em meados do século XIX foi substituída, principalmente na área urbana, pelo violão, período que marca simbolicamente o estabelecimento de novas formas de sociabilidade entre as camadas populares. Dentre essas, destacam-se os chorões, grupo de músicos cuja atuação foi fundamental para o chamado “abrasileiramento das danças européias” e para o estabelecimento da gravação de discos a partir de 1902
