This study aims to discuss the introduction of gymnastics in 19th Rio de Janeiro clubs, specifically in the associations formed largely by Brazilians citizen. It is a historical research; as sources it were used newspapers published in the capital between 1850 and 1889. It expected to better understand an important aspect of the presence of the practice in society, an expression of the changes that passed the city and of the construction of a new public sensitivity to the physical activities.
