Mining surface scalped hills dead [&] gravel just below 9 slate— Twittery birds morn [morning] & eve [evening] Fly catchers & Red heads Placerville 1700 ft alt [altitude] Strangely picturesque Set in orderly disorder [compliant] to the curious topography—down in a hollow surrounded by a rim of hills formed of dead river gravels, washeded [washed] into bluffs—the streets wind about easily carelessly natural Many pretty cottages. Tranquil orderly people. No noise in streets though surrounded with gold banks the most [posturely] of all minerals, once wild (in 49) people get used to anything.
