Columbia ; red and yel maples and pop; one species of poplar white under side turned by wind seem in bloom. River like pond above cascades for many miles; no doubt by slide perhaps by earthquake hastened. River much narrower above Bonneville, fine views up and down. Mending sliding road now. Island - like outlines of tree masses, 2nd growth like island ends in Alaska; some few aboriginal giants in middle like spires of buildings, thoughtfully beautiful; islands fading in smoke fainter and fainter, overlapping fine expansive effects. Found Dr. Chance in good health, took me to Commercial Club, met Lieut. Wood who went with Inds to hunt goats in Gl Bay mtns; went up to Pacific Gl, saw Inds killing seals; then went up Muir Inlet a little way...
