R.E.W. Goodridgeís autobiographical books about his emigrant experiences in Manitoba, A Year in Manitoba (1882) and The Colonist At Home Again (1889), underscore the conflicted way in which Canadian nationalism, on the one hand, and English nationalist and imperialist sentiments, on the other, shaped English emigrantsí sense of home and nationality. By writing a travelogue about England in his second book as a way to convince English readers that he has not become Canadian, Goodridge attempts to insist on a pure form of Englishness that is belied by the obvious attachment he develops for Manitoba
