[Extract] The EssenCES has been developed for use in secure settings, comprising both forensic psychiatric hospitals and prisons. This chapter presents research findings that examine the psychometric properties of the EssenCES using data collected from prisons and/or forensic psychiatric hospitals in the UK, Germany, Australia, and Singapore (see Chapter 4 for a description of these samples). Considered in this chapter are the factor structure, internal consistency and convergent validity of the EssenCES. The ultimate question addressed here is whether the EssenCES is a valid questionnaire for measuring the social climate in secure settings.
