During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, four well-equipped government observatories were maintained in Australia – in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. These institutions conducted astronomical observations, often in the course of providing a local time service, and they also collected and collated meteorological data. As well, some of these observatories were involved at times in geodetic surveying, geomagnetic recording, gravity measurements, seismology, tide recording and physical standards, so the term 'observatory' was being used in a rather broad sense!
