Metal pollution has long been recognised as having a significant impact on the biodiversity and health of marine coastal systems. The use of biomonitor and bioindicator species is widely accepted for protecting ecosystem integrity and remediation of impacted systems. Species used as biomonitors in marine systems are typically benthic sessile species with a tolerance to the pollutant under investigation. In contrast, bioindicator species need to be sensitive to the pollutant.
