[Extract] Indian Airlines, which was merged into Air India in 2007, was created on August 1, 1953, through the enactment of the Air Corporations Act, which nationalized and amalgamated some seven domestic airlines into a single company. While Indian Airlines was created to serve domestic and regional routes, the state-owned Air India specialized in international routes. Air India has steadily upgraded its fleet of planes and now includes the Airbus A320. In 2005, as part of corporate rebranding, it adopted the name "Indian" to capitalize on its heritage, and an advertisement depicting a turbaned maharaja became the symbol of the airline
