Philip I soon recognized the impossibility of living regularly in Portugal, after some personal observations about the material situation of the Portuguese Crown residences he promptly decided to promote an intensive program of architectural renovation and aesthetic enrichment, not only of the major royal palace, but also of the other countryside residences. Aiming at a pomp and visibility combined with the sober and austere mood proper to the Counter-Reformation, he also established new court ceremonial protocols, both civil and religious, for the public and private palatine dependencies.
