[Extract] Towards Dream Stuff. The title of David Malouf's first collection of short fiction, Antipodes (1985), specified a capacious geographic setting. This was European, specifically contemptuous British colony shorthand for Australia, Malouf's native country. Yet, his title implied, opposite of what? Malouf showed himself more concerned with the particulars of a world disparaged sometimes as new than with critical contrasts between it and the parent cultures of Europe. For Malouf's prose fiction, from Johnno (1975) to the present, has revealed him to be, by intuition and craft, a maker of metaphors and seldom an ironist or satirist
