Background: Previous studies have suggested a role for transforming growth factor (TGF) β and its receptor in thoracic aortic aneurysm, but their role in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is unknown. This study examined the possible association between TGF-β receptor 1 and 2 (TGFBR-1 and -2) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and serum TGF-β1 with AAA. Methods: Serum concentrations of TGF-β1 and 58 SNPs for TGFBR-1 and -2 were examined in 1003 and 1711 men respectively from the Health In Men Study. Validation of SNPs was examined in a second referral cohort of 1043 subjects from New Zealand, of whom 654 had an AAA. Results: Serum TGF-β1 was not associated with AAA.
