Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura CorrespondenteThis study examined how listeners from the South of the United States and from the South of Wales categorize vowels produced by English-speakers with Spanish, Dutch, and Brazilian Portuguese as their first language, and also how they categorize vowels produced by speakers of a third English dialect (Californian English). The findings show that Welsh and American listeners have different perceptual problems when categorizing the vowels produced by the four speaker groups.
