Thomas was invited to undertake the 'Residency in Drawing' at the National Art School Sydney (NAS) and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service alongside Anita Taylor, as co-authors of Drawing (Cassell Illustrated, 2003) from October 2004 - January 2005. Thomas undertook further research visits during 2005 and 2006-07 to complete the development of the work for the exhibtion 'Myths Down Under' in March 2007.The studio/residence situated within the National Park at Middle Head, Sydney Harbour, afforded Thomas the opportunity to respond to this new context, and to examine the relationship of myth, narrative and history through an extensive sequence of drawings that were also developed into a series of 12 paintings.
