This thesis is a study of the discourse, practices and experience of the Republic's coloniasâcollective homes or family placementsâcreated to protect and educate evacuee children during the Spanish Civil War (1936â1939). It contributes to our knowledge of state and rearguard civil institutionsâunions, proletarian movements, revolutionary committees, and humanitarian organizationsâwhich set up colonias and of the experience of parents, children, and teachers as they interacted with these authorities. Intersecting Spanish Civil War history with that of emotions and childhood, the thesis is shaped by a lexical framework of emotion words: fear, hope, (un)happiness, and disillusion.
