Printed in the Netherlands.The intertidal benthic algal communities of two sites located on opposite coasts of São Miguel Island (Azores), were studied over a 2-year period (September 1993 - September 1995). At both sites (São Roque on the south coast and São Vicente on the north), the littoral region was surveyed from the upper intertidal down to the sublittoral fringe. The survey revealed five distinct zones, with a variable degree of overlapping. The two upper zones were characterized by animals (littorinids and barnacles, respectively).
