Inflammation has been implicated in many pathological processes. However, the role played by inflammation in stroke and other central nervous system (CNS) disorders has often been overlooked as investigators have focused on neuronal damage and the role of glutamate. In recent years our understanding of neuroinflammatory pathways and the key roles played by the non-neuronal cells in the CNS has uncovered several new molecular targets that might be amenable to drug intervention. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
