The polysaccharide-encapsulated bacteria, Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae are important causes of invasive bacterial infection in childhood, accounting for most of the cases of bacterial pneumonia and meningitis worldwide.
