OBJECTIVE: Endothelial dysfunction in diabetes is characterized by decreased nitric oxide (NO) bioactivity and increased superoxide (SO) production. Reduced levels of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), an essential cofactor of endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), appear to be associated with eNOS enzymatic uncoupling.
