BACKGROUND: Alloimmunity, autoimmunity, and nonspecific inflammation are known to be potential determinants for long-term islet survival and insulin independence. Sufficient islet mass is a key determinant. But islet engraftment and posttransplant survival may also depend on functional characteristics of the graft.
