This thesis deals with the past participle agreement with the direct object in Italian. The thesis itself is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical part, describes in detail the individual rules of functioning of the past participle agreement in Italian. These rules are then compared with the rules of past participle agreement in French. The second, analytical part, explores the frequency of occurrence of optional agreement with a selected sample of verbs that are used with direct objects in Italian. The aim of the thesis is to verify how much are the rules for optional agreement in Italian observed in different types and stylistic layers in contemporary texts
