Hypoxia is an important stimulus for physiological processes such as development and adaptation to high altitude. It is also important in the pathology of many human diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular and diabetic disorders. The sequence-specific, heterodimeric transcription factor HIF (Hypoxia Inducible Factor) has been shown to play a key role in cellular adaptation to hypoxia.
