Nursing care for the patient with a permanent urinary catheter.

The topic of this bachelor thesis is nursing care about a patient with a permanent urinary catheter. For nursing staff but also for the patient, it is very important to care about the urinary catheter. The care should be thorough, frequent and well performed. Not only good hygiene but also other factors, such as fluid intake, exercise, correct placement of the drainage bag or monitoring of the catheter passability, are inseparable parts of easier catheter functioning. Patients should be instructed by the nursing staff as patient's education about the unitary catheter plays a very important role. Enough information and concern of nursing staff gives the patient the feeling of confidence which leads to a successful treatment. The theoretical part deals with the description of the catheterisation or "cathing". These days, the urinary catheterisation is frequently used especially with patients after injuries, urinary bladder surgeries or old people that suffer from urinary incontinence. Catheterisation shall be divided into three main groups, namely disposable catheterisation, intermittent catheterisation and permanent catheterisation. The crucial fact is that the catheterisation of female patient can be performed by a nurse, a midwife, a paramedic or unlicensed assistive personnel under medical supervision. On the other hand, the catheterisation of the male patient can be performed only by a doctor or a nurse specialized in intensive care. The practical part contains the results of a quantitative research which were obtained by a survey with non-standardized anonymous questionnaires for patients and nurses. The survey was conducted at selected wards in the Nemocnice České Budějovice, a.s. and in Nemocnice Třebíč, state-funded institution. The questionnaire for patients consisted of 17 questions. The total of 100 questionnaires, were given among the patients. All patient's questionnaires were handed back, however 14 questionnaires were eliminated for incompleteness, therefore only 86 questionnaires were used for the research. The questionnaire composed of identity questions as well as questions concerned with patient's knowledge of the care about the permanent urinary catheter. The second questionnaire was prepared for nurses. Out of 80 questionnaires, 62 were handed back and used for research. The questionnaire composed of identity questions and questions aimed at procedures that the nurses follow when inserting the permanent urinary catheter, and questions concerning the care about the patient with permanent urinary catheter. There were two hypothesis set in the practical part. The first hypothesis was whether the nursing staff knows the hygiene principles of the care about the patient with the permanent urinary catheter. The second hypothesis was whether the medical staff follows the standards when inserting the permanent urinary catheter. To verify the hypothesis, the quantitative research was conducted.
