The quality of communication in families using television as a background

Thesis is focused on communication in families that use television as a background to everyday life. The theoretical part deals with the definition of family and with constitution of the family system, as well as communication within the family and the perception and use of television in the family. The main research questions are: What is the reality in verbal communication of families that use TV as a background? How perceive their communication reality members of the families included in the study sample? There are four families in different stages of the development cycle in the study sample. Data were collected through semi-structured interview and observation. Outputs are analyzed with emphasis on capturing recurring themes so as to be able to identify and describe the general topics. They are summarized in the form of multiple case studies of social groups (families) focused on aspects of family communication and the use of television as a background. The aim of the study was to understand the perception of communication among members of families in which television is used as a backdrop and to recognize their communication habits - this goal has been fulfilled partially. It has been shown that television turned on in the background interferes with communication. Motivation of particular members of family to use television as a background and attitudes towards TV may be different. Television is the most commonly perceived as a way to escape from the silence, or as protection against the feeling of loneliness
