This thesis explores horror as a film genre, and the way the sound techniques are used to cause the emotion of fear. The first part analyses the problem of definition and classification of genre in general. The second part focuses on the genre of horror; it explores the possible sources of fear in general and its embodiments in horrors. The last part focuses on sound in horror films and describes different methods of how fear may be caused through the interaction of sound and image
