The paper is devoted to people with disabillities as a category of victims of crime with special needs, with particular focus on the mentally handicapped people as a particularly vulnerable group. The aim is to assess the current police approach to the mentally retarded as victims of crime and the resulting recommendations for appropriate police procedures and specific approach when working with the mentioned group of victims. The paper uses information gained from extensive analysis of documents with relevant topics. This information is supplemented by results of in-depth, structured interviews with handicapped people who had become victims of crime.
