Stricter environmental regulations and a greater need for waste minimization have increased the importance of process control to chemical plant operations. However, the standard PID controller common to most plants often does not offer sufficient performance as the controller is not designed to account for the nonlinear or nonstationary behavior of most processes. The desire to improve controller performance has led to a growing interest in adaptive control. Adaptive controllers typically operate in a model based fashion, where process data is used to update the parameters of a simple linear process model so that the model remains descriptive of the process dynamic behavior.
