The primary purpose of this dissertation is to highlight Carmen Sylva\u27s (Queen Elisabeth of Romania, 1843-1916) contribution to music, specifically, though not limited to, art song through her literary works from the latter part of the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Included is the most comprehensive list of composers who set Sylva\u27s poetry and prose to date. Chapter one focuses on the historical and cultural background to Sylva\u27s life, including a biographical account focusing on her transition to Romania from her country of birth (Germany) as consort to King Carol I (1839-1914) of Romania.
