Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is the most common disseminated bacterial disease in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and in Rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) inoculated with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), and is associated with profound wasting [1–5].
