Concerns about environmental pollution have caused new regulations to be implemented on a global level. Freons were shown as the principal cause of the depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer, and global action was set forth to reduce their emissions by the 1987 Montreal Protocol. Effective, environmental friendly decomposition of these pollutants is sought. In this work, the efficient destruction of two Freon species, Freon 21 and Freon 142B, using silent discharge plasmas was demonstrated. Gas chromatography was used to follow their decomposition in mixtures with oxygen, nitrogen, and water.
