The purpose of this study is to outline the development of Korean American literature from the early twentieth century to the present, using the notion of self as a focal point for examination.^ Korean American literature, at least within the boundary of this study, denotes works written in English by American writers of Korean descent. The main focus of this study will be on first generation Korean American writers because works produced by second or third generation Korean American writers has been relatively scarce and concentrated almost exclusively in the last decade or so.
