The aim of this paper is to describe and compare various methods of runoff separation. Therefore it is necessary to explain basic hydrological terms that are important for understanding the water regime of landscape. Long-term monitoring of the water regime of the whole catchment area can provide successful detection of hydrological extremes such as droughts or devastating floods. The paper is divided in two parts. The theoretical part includes the literature rerview explaining basic hydrological terms and individual components of water cycle in nature, summary of methods usually used for runoff separation, and the description of the applied methods.
