The study deals with a compulsory voting with special emphasis on political and legal context of its application. The authors present the most common arguments for and against of compulsory voting and basic sanction mechanisms which are usually used in case of a breach of duty. Subsequently, the authors offer short studies of historical (Czechoslovakia, Austria) and existing (Australia, Belgium, Switzerland, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein) cases of compulsory voting regulation
