The forms of public investments in film in chosen European countries

The aim of my bachelor thesis is to describe a current domination of Hollywood over the European movie industry including its cultural, historical and economical fundamentals and to outline possible solutions via public investments in the movie industry in chosen European countries. My thesis is divided in two parts, theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part I will concern myself with the historical background and cultural and economical causes of Hollywood's contemporary hegemony over European movie industry and I will point out several international initiatives meant to support spreading of European film, including the MEDIA programme of the European Union and Cannes film festival. Forms of public investments are analyzed and evaluated in the practical part. I focused on the system of public subsidies as it is organized in Czech Republic and United Kingdom and compared them with each other. My aim is to highlight the insufficiencies of current Czech system in comparison with the well-organized and institutionally effective system of United Kingdom
