This work deals with substance of satan as it is reflected in patristic. Due to fact, that the meaning of word satan is not clearly defined and there is more words with similar meaning, is in first chapter etymological analysis of word satan. In second chapter there is analysis of question, who can be called church father and a brief information about life of selected writers. In third chapter is situated analysis of satan in book of Augustinus Aurelius De civitate dei. Fourth chapter deals with substance of satan in book of Origenes De principiís as it is reflected by Endre von Ivánka in Plato christianus. Fifth chapter is focused on substance of satan in book About games by Tertullianus
