Background: Issues have been raised concerning the robustness and validity of alleged serum markers discovered by surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF MS). Pre-analytical variables have been shown to exert a profound effect on protein profiles, irrespective of true biological variation.
