In European Union’s school-contexts, current teaching and learning foreign languages has been continuing a tradition whose roots go back to the nineteenth century when the dominant and overall educational objective was to prepare children for a successful citizen’s life within national boundaries. Obviously, the goal does no longer match with pedagogical criteria defined by a Union of 27 states with 24 official languages looking for establishing more European identity. Against this background, the paper discusses the potential impact of foreign language education on fostering “eurocomprehension”, i.e. a receptive plurilingualism far beyond the EU’s guideline.
