The thesis is a collection of knowledge concerning the development of fractions and their use in mathematics lessons in elementary school. The theoretical part focuses on the history, characteristics, and fragments of arithmetic operations with them. I mention also the possibility of problems and complexities of the teaching of this topic. The practical part deals with the level of knowledge of the topic for 1st and 2nd grade elementary school, specifically in the 5th and 7th class ZŠ, ZUŠ and MŠ Ledenice. I also tested pupils from 2nd class of grammar school in Česká street in České Budějovice. The last part of my thesis is a section on examples related to the topic.
