Problem of idiom confrontation in translation literature

Idioms are part of lexicology, theory of language. Idiomatic set expressions we can find in every sphere of national language. This dissertation treats of definition of idiom, its history, different theories, clasification and present progress of these phraseological combinations. Practical part consists in confrontation of english idioms in a book by J. K. Rowling {--} Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s Stone with the usage of czech equivalents in translation by Vladimír Medek. It is specialized in the method of idiom translation, which means if the idiom was translated into the idiom or into the common lexical unit or if the idiom was not translated at all
