How much is Big Data? A Classification Framework for IT Projects and Technologies

IT Projects related to Big Data topics are often less successful than anticipated. One reason for that is uncertainty about the suitability of Big Data technologies for certain project settings. Gartner’s Data Magnitude Index has been developed to address this problem. However since its introduction in 2012, Big Data characteristics and metrics have been adapted. Therefore, we develop a quantitative classification framework for Big Data problems and technologies on the basis of a structured literature review and an analysis of 51 use-cases. The application of the framework in two scenarios of an European consulting company demonstrate the suitability of the framework to assess Big Data-related project settings.
