The paper summarizes the role of computers in the twenty five years since the establishment of the Institute of Geonics Cz.Acad.Sci. It recalls the importance of computer systems and computer science in general, especially for mathematical modelling, one of the most important research fields of the institute. In the course of time computers, networks and Internet are unavoidable for each of the fields of study of the institute. The contribution surveys the main stages in this development, from the point of view of demanding computations in particular, and mentions various computers and hardware characteristic for each stage
