Beside high water events in the summer of 1813, the flood from August 1880 is one of the most severe natural disasters occurring in the Odra River Basin (especially in its right-hand tributary Ostravice) in the 19th century, which is believed to be comparable with the flood disaster in July 1997. It destroyed the Ostrava region and became for a long time a milestone for local people who divided the time into a period before its occurrence and after it.
