The purpose of this study was to determine the preparedness levels of middle school teachers, assistant principals, and principals to respond to acts of violence. Violence has existed since the beginning of organized education. School violence has increased more than 50% in the last 10 years. The murder rate among 14-to 17-year-olds increased 165% from 1985 to 1995, according to a 1995 U.S. Justice Department report on juvenile offenders and their victims (Kadel, Watkins, Follman, & Hanunond, 1999).
