A look at a City without planning: patterns in the form of informal neighborhoods in the city of Manta, Ecuador

En Ecuador distinguimos cuatro periodos en los que se desencadenan procesos migratorios importantes. En éstos adquieren protagonismo formas de ocupación heterodoxas, respondiendo a la urgente necesidad de vivienda y desencadenando un proceso de expansión urbana incontrolada en distintas ciudades del país. En Manta esta expansión se da principalmente en el lado suroriente con la aparición de “invasiones”, que fueron fomentadas por el clientelismo mediante la autoconstrucción y el fraccionamiento del suelo al margen de la legislación. Ante un desarrollo urbano donde predominaron las iniciativas individuales, que acabaron pautando el crecimiento y la orientación del trazado urbano, cabría una mirada pertinente para hallar un orden y unos patrones en la composición del plano irregular, y comprender las “reglas” de este fenómeno.In Ecuador we identify four periods in which important migratory processes are triggered. In these, forms of heterodox occupation take center stage, responding to the urgent need for housing and unleashing a process of uncontrolled urban expansion in different cities of the country. In Manta, we observe this expansion mainly on the southeastern side, composed of several "invasions" promoted by political clientelism through self-construction and fractioning of the land outside the legislation. In the face of such growth, dominated byindividual initiatives that ended up regulating the development and orientation of the urban layout, a more adequate look should be taken to find order and patterns within this irregular plane, and to understand the "rules" of this phenomenon.Peer Reviewe
