Operation and control of a hybrid power system

During the last years the urgency to invest in new types of energies has become clearer. These energies are the renewable energies, whose together with microgrids, allows the energetic independence of remote areas or developing countries from the world. The project explained in here studies the design, modelling, control and simulation of a microgrid completely isolated. This microgrid is based on diesel generators (DG), photovoltaic energy (PV) and an AC/DC converter known as Voltage Source Converter (VSC). The modelling of the working principle of PV cells is extensively studied and the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control algorithm used in order to make PV work at maximum power. Different scenarios of the Diesel Generator are presented and the most robust and reliable is chosen to feed the microgrid with constant power supply. A complete study of the VSC model is explained and implemented together with the PV and the Energy Storage System (ESS) with the goal of feeding the three-phase grid with this DC sources. And finally the control for the various elements of the grid, most of them based on PI controllers in order to reduce the steady-state error to zero, and ensure that the different simulations changing the input parameters of the system, allows the system to reach a balance state in a small time
