If we want to take unconscious perception research further beyond general methodological and philosophical discussions, towards tangible experiments, we are faced with particularly difficult problem – to bring into line third-personal approaches with subjective phenomenon, which appears to the third person only vicariously. Lots of suggestions how to define consciousness operationally in unconscious perception research in contemporary cognitive psychology have been made, as well as many critiques of such attempts.
