Constructed wetlands are natural purification systems consisting of shallow ponds or canals, planted with vegetation of wetlands and designed to aid in the treatment of wastewater. The horizontal subsurface flow wetlands have some inconveniences, among which clogging is a highlight. This phenomenon is the progressive loss of the initial hydraulic characteristics, resulting in decreased porosity and hydraulic conductivity. Recent studies done by the GEMMA group show how aeration is one of the factors that most affects the clogging.
