Natural systems of high rate algal ponds (HRAP) are presented as an alternative to conventional systems for wastewater treatment. The water treatment is carried out thanks to the symbiosis between heterotrophic bacteria that degrade organic matter, and algae, which through photosynthesis provide the necessary oxygen for aerobic bacteria. On the other hand, the algal biomass can be evaluated in anaerobic digesters to produce biogas. However, this digestion process is limited by the slowness of the microalgae cell wall degradation and high nitrogen content which can cause inhabitation of the activity of methanogenic microorganisms.
