General marked decrease of abundance of capercaillie population in the second half of the 20th century has afflicted the Šumava region less dramatically than the other regions of the Czech Republic. However, at the turn of the 70s and 80s, capercailli disappeared from the foothills of the Šumava Mts., and even the part of the population inhabiting the southeastern part of the Šumava Mts, came close to extinction
