The fundamental concept of interferometric aperture synthesis microwave radiometry for Earth observation is reviewed. The measurement principles and a discussion on the signal processing techniques for image reconstruction are briefly summarized. Examples of real measurements from the sensor onboard the ESA SMOS mission are used to illustrate the image reconstruction techniques.Peer Reviewe
